Stone & Oil
Driveways, parking lots, and other surfaces.
Stone and oil driveways, grading, and excavating for Ithaca and the hills around Cayuga Lake.
Also called stone and oil, tar and chip, or chip seal.
Gorges and Hills
Ithaca sits at the south end of Cayuga Lake, with East Hill, West Hill, and South Hill rising above the flats and creeks cutting down the hillsides toward the water. Plenty of properties here have a driveway on a real grade.
Runoff is the main thing to plan for. A steep driveway moves a lot of water in a storm, and the surface only lasts if that water has a clear path off the side. We set the pitch and the edges first, before any oil or stone goes down. If the base is not right, nothing built on top of it will be either.
Services
Properties outside the city tend to be larger and more rural, with long drives back from the road. Stone and oil suits them. It is cost effective on a long run, it has a natural stone finish that fits the landscape, and it does not need regular sealing.
Driveways, parking lots, and other surfaces.
Pitch, slope, and drainage set before any surface goes down.
Walkways, landings, retaining walls, and more.
Topsoil, stone, gravel, and more, Monday through Friday.
Hillside lots often need earthwork and retaining walls along with a new surface. We do excavating and grade work, concrete work including walls, and hauling of topsoil, stone, and gravel.
Gravel and stone are sold from our yard in Greene, and delivery is available Monday through Friday. See gravel products
The Process
We set the pitch for drainage and compact a gravel base. Our dump trucks remove dirt and debris from the site.
Hot oil goes down over the compacted base and binds the surface together.
Small stone is spread over the oil and rolled into place for a natural stone finish.
Questions
Oil and stone is also called stone and oil, tar and chip, or chip seal. We compact a gravel base, apply hot oil, spread small stone over it, and roll it into place. The result keeps a natural stone look and is a cost effective alternative to asphalt.

No. Oil and stone does not need regular sealing.
It handles freeze and thaw cycles well. If you plow, keep the blade just above the surface and finish with a shovel. Snowblowers are fine on oil and stone surfaces.

Stone Kote was not only professional but they did an outstanding job on our driveway. Their price was competitive and our driveway went from a loose stone mud pit to a level and new driveway. We would highly recommend this company!
