Stone & Oil
Driveways, parking lots, and other surfaces.
Stone and oil driveways, grading, and excavating across Cortland and the rest of Cortland County.
Also called stone and oil, tar and chip, or chip seal.
County Seat
Cortland sits in the Tioughnioga River valley with Interstate 81 close by and rolling farmland and hills in every direction. The city has older neighborhoods with short driveways, and the county around it has a lot of long, rural ones.
Many country properties here start with a loose stone driveway that has gone soft and rutted. Rebuilding the base and putting down stone and oil gives you a level surface that stays put, and it needs less maintenance over time than blacktop.
Services
Winters in Cortland County are long, so the surface has to handle plowing and repeated freezing and thawing. Stone and oil holds up well through freeze and thaw cycles and does not need regular sealing.

A good driveway starts with the ground underneath it. We do the excavating and grade work, haul away dirt and debris with our dump trucks, and finish with the stone and oil surface.
Gravel and stone are sold from our yard in Greene, and delivery is available Monday through Friday. See gravel products
The Process
We set the pitch for drainage and compact a gravel base. Our dump trucks remove dirt and debris from the site.
Hot oil goes down over the compacted base and binds the surface together.
Small stone is spread over the oil and rolled into place for a natural stone finish.
Questions
Oil and stone is also called stone and oil, tar and chip, or chip seal. We compact a gravel base, apply hot oil, spread small stone over it, and roll it into place. The result keeps a natural stone look and is a cost effective alternative to asphalt.

Stone Kote was not only professional but they did an outstanding job on our driveway. Their price was competitive and our driveway went from a loose stone mud pit to a level and new driveway. We would highly recommend this company!
